After a 3 hour flight out of Hong Kong we touched down in Phuket Province Thailand and headed straight for Kamala Beach on the Andaman Sea.
Our flight got in rather late so our first impression was in the dark. Luckily we had been wisely advised to ignore all the people vying to rip us off on transportation and headed to the metered taxi stand just outside of the Airport. Our cabbie on the 35 minute ride from the airport put in what he thought was a white girl appropriate music aka top 40 hits spanning from the oh so popular Justin Bieber to Jessica Simpson "all I want for Christmas". Pretty bad with no sign of fever except we made a game of guessing who the pop star was. Once we got into Kamala we got dropped off in front of the bar in front of the hotel and were greeted by the eyes of all their patrons. Slightly awkward. Inside the hotel we weren't really sure what we were getting into. We had a choice between two rooms and of course we chose the one whose door was still in tact as not to risk someone applying excessive force and busting in.
In the morning we were pleasantly surprised. As billed the hotel was in fact on the beach. Our free breakfast overlooked the water and included all you can eat pineapple and fried eggs with incredibly orange yolks which matched the tang like juice they served. After realizing that we made a good choice in accommodation we booked a second night and got ready for the beach.
A footpath/ road paralleled the beach and featured food, massage, beach toys, clothing and accessories. Lauren instantly had her summer makeover buying some questionably knock off Havianas and Ray Bans. Coconut in hand she was a very happy girl. For me as always I needed some grub. After passing by countless restaurants I chose Freedom, which Lauren has seen mentioned in guidebook. As she sat on the beach chair we rented for the day I macked some outstanding thick rice noodles with basil, chilis and seafood. For the rest of the day we posted up on the beach buying skewers and waters to keep us going.
Right before dusk we headed to the far end of the beach where Lauren had scouted an Aussie opened treehouse-ish bar for a round. Lauren got a delicious Linchburg Lemonade and I tried out the vodka watermelon lychee concoction which hit the spot.
We walked back along the beach at sundown and then went out to some tasty thai at the Kamala Dreams Hotel's resturant Charoen. Afterwards we walked through the town and I helped Lauren haggle for a cute shirt. We then hit up Bob's Bar, a reggae themed Bar on the beach. Listening to reggae and getting my ass handed to me in connect four, Lauren is apparently a connect four and tic tac toe shark, I continued to drink Chi Chis aka Pina Colada and Lauren opted for Fernet and a soda back.
The next morning after breakfast we cruised back down the beach path and Lauren got a pedicure before we took the bus to Phuket Town to catch the ferry.

They serve fernet?! I can barely get it in bakersfield. Mesmerizing white spider flower. And I love that Lauren is a connect four shark. We should have it, I'm a bit out of practice, but trained for years. :)
